Why Drivers Tint Their Windows

Heat rejection. A sun-baked cabin is the number-one reason drivers tint. Modern carbon and ceramic films reject a large share of the sun's infrared energy, so the car cools faster and the AC works less.

UV protection. Quality film blocks up to 99% of ultraviolet rays — protecting skin on long drives and keeping dashboards, seats and trim from fading and cracking.

Privacy & security. Darker rear glass keeps valuables out of sight, and film helps hold shattered glass together in a break-in or accident.

Glare & comfort. Tint cuts headlight and sun glare, reducing eye strain on commutes — and it gives any vehicle a cleaner, finished look.

How to Choose a Tint Shop

Know the Law Before You Tint

Every state sets its own darkest-legal tint, measured as VLT MAX. Going darker than the limit can mean a ticket and paying to have the film removed. Here are a few of the most-searched states — the full guide covers all 50.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does VLT mean in window tinting?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light a film lets through the glass. A lower VLT number means a darker tint. A 35% VLT film lets 35% of light in and blocks the rest, which is why state laws are written in VLT numbers.

How dark can I legally tint my car windows?

It depends on your state and which window you're tinting — front side windows are regulated most tightly, rear windows usually less so. Every state page in our Tint Laws section lists the darkest legal tint (VLT MAX) for each window position, plus windshield and reflectivity rules.

How much does window tinting cost?

Pricing varies with the vehicle, the film type (dyed, carbon or ceramic) and your market, so there's no honest single number. Most shops in this directory quote free — call a couple of well-reviewed shops near you and compare film type and warranty, not just price.

How long does a tint job take?

A full car typically takes a few hours at a professional shop, and the film then needs a few days to fully cure — shops usually advise keeping windows up during that window. SUVs, older cars with film removal, and full windshield work take longer.

Does window film really block UV and heat?

Yes. Quality window film blocks up to 99% of ultraviolet rays — the part of sunlight that fades interiors and damages skin. Heat rejection varies by film: basic dyed films help mostly with glare and privacy, while ceramic films reject substantially more infrared heat.

Can shops tint homes and businesses too?

Many can. A large share of the shops listed here also install residential and commercial flat glass film for heat control, privacy and safety. Check a shop's page for its services, or ask when you call.
